Interfaith Marriage: Convergences and Divergences between Islamic and Catholic Law in Indonesia

Interfaith marriage remains a contentious issue among Indonesia’s religious communities and requires an interreligious, moderate approach rather than a single-faith perspective. This study examines Islamic and Catholic legal views on interfaith marriage, focusing on three key aspects: marital harmony, commitment to personal faith, and children's religious education. Using a comparative religion method through literature review, it analyzes sacred texts and their influence on binding laws. A phenomenological approach presents real-life experiences of interfaith couples. Both traditions cite divine revelation to justify their positions and seek to minimize the perceived risks of interfaith unions. Islamic law, based on fiqh, generally prohibits such marriages, while the Catholic Church discourages them but may grant dispensations if the Catholic partner vows to uphold their faith. Despite these restrictions, the study finds that interfaith families can still achieve harmony. Key to this are mutual tolerance, respect for religious freedom, and open communication between partners.
